What is this Journey?

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Lao-tzuThe Way of Lao-tzu
Chinese philosopher (604 BC - 531 BC)
Although this is the popular form of this quotation, a more correct translation from the original Chinese would be “The journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one’s feet.” Rather than emphasizing the first step, Lau Tzu regarded action as something that arises naturally from stillness. Another potential phrasing would be, “Even the longest journey must begin where you stand.” http://www.quotationspage.com/quote/24004.html

See, and I was just going to use the popular form of the quote but I really like this one better: "Even the longest journey must begin where you stand."  So, here I stand, well, rather lie, as I prepare for my journey which will begin tomorrow, October 1, 2012 and end 655 days later on July 18, 2014 - also known as my 40th birthday.

Yes, the big, giant, scary 40 is quickly approaching.  In fact, much more quickly than I ever think it would.    But, the journey of which I write is not the journey of approaching 40, rather it's a journey I wish to accomplish by my 40th birthday – The journey of 4,000 miles.

Prior to my 4oth birthday I wish to travel 100 miles for every year I have lived – for a total of 4,000 miles.  This travel will be self-propelled travel – meaning walking, running (haha), biking, swimming, or other ingenious ways I think of over the next 655 days.

This blog is dedicated to my journey and all that it entails – could have stuff about family, work, etc. because they all play into my ability to accomplish my journey.

For those who know me, this is quite a quest for me – I’m currently extremely obese and most of my day is sedentary. So, indeed this journey of 4,000 miles must begin here, where I, quite literally, stand and end with me in motion – a motion which I hope will inspire me to continue what I begin over these 655 days and develop habits that I hope will translate to my children.

I invite any of you to join me on my journey of 4,000. You don’t have to make the goal to be 4,000 miles for you, but make it a fitness goal that you want to achieve by July 18, 2014.  Share it with me here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AsJ81m7XA2i7dGpnZnFVVGJSV2dfUGtPLXZkakpaeHc&pli=1#gid=0

Add your name and track your progress.  It’ll be fun to see what my small group of family and friends can accomplish in this short time.

I look forward to seeing you along the journey.
